OLOG eNewsletter Term 4 Week 4
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Last week, I had the privilege to attend the Year 6 Canberra trip and what an amazing week we had.
The tour involved visits to many attractions and gave students an insight into Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and system of government. The itinerary included a visit to Parliament House, Government House, the official residence of Honourable David Hurley. We did see His Excellency depart for his official duties prior to us commencing our visit. Our students enjoyed Parliament House and participating in an education session at the Parliamentary Education Office, where they role-played passing a bill with amendments.
Other highlights included:
- Australian War Memorial where Liam Heinrich laid a wreath in the ceremony at the end of the day to recognise a significant soldier
- Sportex at the Australian Institute of Sport, testing stamina and flexibility.
- Learning how to vote at the National Electoral Centre.
- Moments of reflection on Anzac Parade and the Australian War Memorial.
- Questacon and the ever-popular ‘free-fall’.
- Australian Mint
- National Portrait Gallery
- Discovering the origins of Canberra at the National Capital Exhibition.
The week was highly enjoyable and fast-paced. Our Year 6 students are to be commended on how they engaged with all activities, showing curiosity, respect, and a thirst for learning. Thank you to the staff accompanying the trip, Alistair Fleming, Candice Martin, Sue Brinkworth and Lachlan Ash. We arrived back in Adelaide on Friday evening, 10:20pm with many tired Year 6's however a memorable experience for all.
The Year 6 students also met with Federal Minister for Boothby, Louise Miller Frost to assist with their deeper understanding of Government, Democracy and what occurs with her role in Canberra. We are grateful of her visit during her busy schedule.
LITTLE OLOG TRANSITION PROGRAM FOR RECEPTION 2024
It was a joy to welcome our incoming families for our two Reception classes for 2024, at the Parent Information Session held on Monday evening. On the night, we provided an in-depth view of our programs, practices, and readiness tips for our littlest students and their families.
We shared our EY learning, curriculum approaches, particularly in Literacy and Numeracy, the meaning and living of the OLOG way and the support and care through the transition program. I have full confidence that our newest Reception students will flourish and have the best possible start to their school life at OLOG.
It was also lovely to speak with our parent group after the session, and to hear just how excited they are to join our wonderful community. The relationship between school and home is arguably the most trusted and crucial throughout a child's journey, and undeniably holds the greatest influence over this 7-year period. Our Little OLOG children commence their first visit on Friday.
SOCIOGRAM For 2024
This week, teachers will support students to nominate three friends that they learn well with. This information will help the process of class placements for 2024. I encourage parents to discuss this with your child to assist them with their ideas of who to add to the sociogram.

All Souls and All Saints Day Mass
Last Thursday we celebrated All Saints and All Souls Day with a whole school mass.
We prayed for all the holy people of God. The holy people of God are called saints.
We were reminded throughout the mass that we could also be saints. We made special prayers for our loved ones who have departed and we joyfully sang the song; “We are all Saints” by Andrew Chinn to finish our mass .
All Saints’ Day
All Saints’ Day is on November 1st each year. The origin of All Saints' Day can be traced back to the early Christian Church when it was established as a day to remember and celebrate the martyrs and other saints who had died for their faith. Over time, the scope of the holiday expanded to include martyrs and all faithful Christians who had lived righteous and holy lives. It is a day to recognize the saints' collective witness and express gratitude for their example.
All Souls Day
All Souls Day is on November 2nd each year. All Souls Day also called the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, is a day of prayer and remembrance for the faithful departed, observed primarily in the Catholic Church but also in certain Christian denominations.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
The Premier’s Reading Challenge Medals and Certificates have arrived.
All children who participated in the 2023 Premier’s Reading Challenge will be acknowledged at the Week 5 Assembly on Monday afternoon at 2.30pm.
After the assembly the teachers will give the medals and certificates to the children.
We have a number of children who completed reading 20 books this year for the 20th Anniversary of the Premier’s Reading Challenge, and they will receive a special certificate for their amazing effort.
Glenelg Christmas Pageant
We are very excited to let you know that Our Lady of Grace School will be participating in the Glenelg Christmas Pageant for 2023.
The Glenelg Christmas Pageant is on Sunday 26th November starting at 10.30am.
The parade should be finished by 11.00-11.30am. Children will need to arrive between 8.30am-9.45am on the day and meet myself and staff in the designated area. At the end of the Glenelg Christmas Pageant there will be an opportunity to have a photo taken with Santa between 11.30am and 3.00pm should you be interested in this.
We would like to keep our dress up and theme simple and relevant to our Catholic Identity and ask that children who are participating dress up as angels or shepherds.
White and lots of tinsel would be great for the angels and plain coloured clothing and tea towels for the headdress for shepherds.
We would like to see as many children participating in the Glenelg Christmas Pageant as possible. Please complete the E-Form on Audiri by Friday 10th November if you would like your child to be involved.
Any child from Reception to Year 6 is welcome to be involved.
We will have a short meeting to answer any questions on Thursday November 16th at 3.15pm. I will also send out more information closer to the day.
Mathematics
OLOG teachers have joined St Mary’s Memorial teachers to do some curriculum mapping for 2024. Teachers worked in year level teams and sorted the Achievement Standards and Content Descriptors for the whole of the 2024 school year.
The opportunity to connect with teachers from St Mary’s and discuss and collaborate was amazing. We will meet again in Week 5 to work on Assessments.
Joy and blessings,

SACPSSA Athletics Carnival
On Monday the OLOG Athletics Team travelled to SA Athletics Stadium, Mile End to compete in the SACPSSA Athletics Carnival.
Throughout the day 30 students ran, jumped, threw and hurdled against 9 other schools in our division. The OLOG boys team finished 7th overall and our girls team finished 6th overall, in a very tough division.
Well done to Alice Gallagher who won the Year 6 girls championship medal.
All students competed to their best of their ability, and we are very proud of the sportsmanship they displayed on the day!
This week students from Reception to Year 6 participated in First Aid training through St John's SA. The First Aid in Schools Program is a community initiative delivered by qualified trainers from St John SA. The aim is to equip children with the first aid skills they need if faced with a medical emergency. The course was fun and informative with hands-on techniques and demonstrations. As St John SA is a charitable organisation, to ensure the First Aid in Schools program is sustainable they have created an online crowdfunding platform for parents, friends and the community to help raise funds to cover the cost of each classroom taught first aid.
On Friday 3rd November we held our last Pop-up Playgroup for 2023.
We would like to thank Alicia Miller for all her hard work behind the scenes to plan a succesful day for families attending. A special mention to Abbey Rice for assisting Alicia on the day.
We look forward to hosting many more Pop-up Playgroups in 2024!
The weather is warming up and the Green Team are in full swing harvesting winter crops and preparing the soil for Spring and Summer plantings. Onions, carrots, lettuce and beetroots have been sent home with parsley, garlic, leeks and tomatoes soon to follow.
Our worm farm from Worm Solutions arrived late in Term 3 and we introduced worms and compostable materials in Week 2 of Term 4. This was made possible largely on the back of a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant of $1000. Students have enjoyed learning about the processes involved and tracking the inroads made by our team of OLOG worms. In time the worms will produce nutrient rich Worm Tea which we can use as an alternative to fertilisers on our gardens and Veggie patches.
Clinton Alleway
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
My name is Paul Henson and it has been a pleasure to join Our Lady of Grace School as guitar and ukulele Instrumental Teacher.
I started playing guitar at 13 years old. In walking distance from the family home, I had the good fortune to have Eric Marshall (Eric is a leading jazz guitarist in SA) as my first guitar teacher. After each lesson my brother and I would sit for another hour as Eric played chord solos over Beatles and early standards. Learning to read music on guitar, both single notes and chords had a lasting effect, as written notes was an entry to the magical world of music and harmony. My love for the guitar and music was here to stay.
At 18 years I was lucky to find Guy Strazollio a French Jazz Guitarist ( Vince Jone’s Guitarist , Australia icon crooner Trumpet player). Guy opened a world of study with scales and chord relationships.
I have been support for Renee Geyer, Joan Armatrading , Courtney Pine , Blood Sweat and Tears plus gigs like Grand Prix Balls, Manly Jazz Festival , Port Jazz Festival, Live to Air JJJ in Sydney and Adelaide, Opening Adelaide Fringe and the Canberra Comedy Festival.
I also studied As: Dip; Performing Arts Jazz for two years and was the only student in all three years to receive a Distinction in performance for our recitals.
My teaching is based on enjoyment for one’s music journey and preparing student’s for performance. Mentoring ensembles has been very rewarding and I have seen many young people progress to high school music and beyond.
